Interns, Residents, Fellows – Coaching
Residency and Fellowship is an intense point in time. This rigorous training period presents numerous challenges, including burnout, stress, and anxiety. As new physicians develop their professional identities, emotional support is often limited.
Coaching can be extremely helpful to physicians at this critical juncture. Providing support through honest discussion, self-reflection, and interpersonal skill-building can offset some of the stressors that come into play at this difficult stage.
It is well-known that, during this time, long work hours, intense assimilation of new and demanding information, difficult patients and families, and working with the multi-disciplinary staff can all come together to create a grueling experience.
We have developed a special expertise in working with residents and fellows, and are very tuned-in to the unique needs and challenges of this stage. Using a strengths-based approach, we have found that the interns, residents, and fellows benefit greatly from the coaching relationship.
Some examples of comments from residents and/or fellows who have experienced coaching;
“Thank you again for all your help. Honestly, our talks help me a lot. I only open up to people I can trust and relate to….just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate our talks. I recognize that you are making me better, and you know I’m not one to be fake – I always mean what I say….” Dr. A.
“This has been one of the best things that has happened to me. You helped me see myself more clearly, and let me find a lot of my own solutions. I’ve learned how to deal better with the patients and families…I’m much more confident now and remember to listen more before interrupting…” Dr. M.
“You’ve helped me learn to control my temper and be ‘nicer’ to people….and seems like people are being ‘nicer’ to me, too….” Dr. G.
“Just wanted to let you know I appreciate all the help and insight you have given me…” Dr. P.
